The second key

An original fictional mystery about a family object and a mistaken destination.

01

An address in the box

After her uncle moved, Lena found a key in a box marked “14 Orchard.” That street had been demolished. She imagined a forgotten flat, then a hidden room, then someone her family had never mentioned. The theories grew because the key offered so little.

02

A different catalogue

A stamped number led to an instrument maker’s old repair ledger. Orchard was a model, not a street. Number fourteen was a travelling writing case—the same case that had stood open on Lena’s shelf throughout the search.

03

Already within reach

Inside the lid pocket lay an index of family letters by place and year. Nothing had been locked away; Lena had overlooked the pocket. She began with the first letter and relabelled the key. The discovery was not a secret person, but a collection she could finally organise.
